The Lucky Guy star, who turns 57 next month, went home empty-handed after Tracy Letts won the Leading Actor statuette for Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? on Sunday night.
The Tony-winning playwright beat out Hanks for his portrayal of George, one-half of the bickering couple at the heart of the Edward Albee drama.

However, the Forrest Gump actor also presented at the live CBS broadcast at Radio City Music Hall, dusting off his trusty tuxedo to award Judith Light Featured Actress for The Assembled Parties.
Earlier on the red carpet, Tom sweetly snapped shots of his wife of 25 years Rita Wilson with his iPhone.
The mother-of-two happily obliged by flaunting her pins in a cobalt-blue gown with rhinestone detailing.
The 56-year-old actress, born Margarita Ibrahimova, accessorised her glamorous look with rhinestone stilettos, diamond-drop earrings, and a glittering clutch.
Tom was nominated for his Broadway debut in Nora Ephron's Lucky Guy, which runs through July 3 at the Broadhurst Theatre.
'I was worried, quite frankly, about the physiology for it,' Hanks recently told CBS.
'I didn't know if I had the tools or if I was in shape.'
Wilson previously starred in Broadway's Love, Loss, and What I Wore, which was penned by Nora and Delia Ephron.
